model book is an indispensable tool used by the modern scribe. Whether you prefer calligraphy, illumination, painting or layout and design, creating a model book is one of the best tools that you’ll have in your box. It is, essentially, the textbook that you write yourself. One of the most infamous model books from period is the Gottingen Model Book from 1450.

In this text, the scribe details the process of creating a number of illustrative designs commonly used in ornamenting books of the period. It demonstrates that even in period (or especially in period) scribes should record their process not only for their own sake but for the sake of future scribes. So how does one create such a thing?
